It\u2019s become shorthand for whether a service makes enough money to justify its existence, but in reality, Expressway is one of Ireland\u2019s <strong>most valuable public transport assets<\/strong> \u2014 both environmentally and socially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Expressway Is the Green, Everyday Option<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Expressway\u2019s coaches are <strong>modern, comfortable, and relatively low-emission<\/strong> \u2014 and they provide one of the <strong>most efficient ways to travel between Ireland\u2019s regional towns and cities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every full coach can take <strong>as many as 30\u201340 cars off the road<\/strong>, reducing carbon emissions, congestion, and fuel use. Many people don\u2019t realise:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These coaches <strong>run every day<\/strong>, not just for tourists;<br>They\u2019re often <strong>faster than driving<\/strong> during peak hours;<br>And they\u2019re one of the <strong>simplest ways to cut personal carbon output<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Time for a Nationwide Campaign<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of quietly reviewing routes, Bus \u00c9ireann and the NTA should be <strong>rebranding Expressway as Ireland\u2019s intercity climate champion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>modern advertising campaign<\/strong> could:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Feature <strong>real travel-time comparisons<\/strong> (\u201cDublin to Wexford in 2 hours \u2013 no parking, no stress\u201d).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emphasize that <strong>Expressway is the greener way<\/strong> \u2014 low-cost, comfortable, and sustainable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include <strong>visual advertising on Dublin Bus stops and Luas shelters<\/strong>, so urban commuters are reminded that intercity travel doesn\u2019t have to mean getting behind the wheel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In Spain and France, national express networks like <strong>ALSA<\/strong> and <strong>FlixBus<\/strong> routinely advertise within cities, linking local and regional travel. Ireland should be doing the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Link Expressway to Park-and-Rides<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To make Expressway more accessible \u2014 especially from suburban Dublin \u2014 Bus \u00c9ireann should <strong>coordinate with the NTA<\/strong> to develop <strong>park-and-ride sites near the M50<\/strong>, such as at <strong>Spawell (Junction 11)<\/strong> and <strong>Liffey Valley<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These sites would let people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Drive from nearby suburbs,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Park affordably,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hop on an Expressway or airport service heading south, west, or north.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This model already works well in <strong>Madrid<\/strong>, where interurban and airport buses make quick, efficient stops at suburban junctions and park-and-rides before joining major motorways. It fills buses faster and gives passengers real alternatives to driving into the city or airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Make Expressway Part of a leap card cap payment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another obvious improvement: ensure trips on Expressway count towards leap card caps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This would encourage seamless travel \u2014 letting someone take a Dublin Bus or Luas to a park-and-ride and then connect directly to an intercity coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Beyond Viability \u2014 Towards Vision<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Expressway review shouldn\u2019t just count passengers; it should measure <strong>potential<\/strong> \u2014 for climate benefits, rural accessibility, and reduced car dependency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cutting or downgrading Expressway routes would move Ireland in the wrong direction.<br>Instead, <strong>Bus \u00c9ireann and the NTA should double down<\/strong> on promoting them as a cornerstone of sustainable mobility \u2014 with better marketing, easier connections, and new suburban access points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Ireland wants fewer cars, cleaner air, and better-connected regions, then Expressway should not be quietly reviewed out of existence.
